Objective: To investigate the incidence of dental anxiety(DA) and its related factors in adult patients from the department of endodontics. Methods: The general situation questionnaire, dental fear survey(DFS) and visual analogue scale for anxiety(VAS-A) were used to evaluate the incidence of DA in 200 adult patients over 18 years old. Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis and binary logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors for the incidence of DA. Results: A total of 190 questionnaires were collected, and the patients were aged from 18 to 62 years. The DFS score was 20-97 with an average of (47.89±17.80). There were 76 patients with DA, accounting for 40%. Chi-square test results showed that there were statistical differences in the distribution of gender, self oral health status cognition, treatment understanding, adverse and indirect treatment experiences(P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the female and indirect treatment experience were the risk factors for DA, while good oral health status was the protective factor for DA. According to VAS-A scale, the factors causing anxiety in DA patients were dental drill, dental drill noise, dentists' rough action, anesthetic needle and other sharp instruments. The factors that caused anxiety in non DA patients were treatment effect, rough action, dental drill, cost, times and length of treatment. Conclusion: The incidence of DA is high among patients in endodontics department, which is affected by many factors such as gender, self oral health status cognition, treatment understanding, and treatment experience. Attention should be paid to DA treatment in the outpatient department of endodontics. |
