Objective To evaluate the effect of vitrectomy on proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Methods 93 cases (139 eyes) with proliferative diabetic retinopathy treated with vitrectomy were retrospectively analysed for their visual acuity and the factors causing the recurrence of PDR with a follow up of (16 72±8 53) months. Results The visual acuity after vitrectomy improved in 98 eyes (70 50%).The mean postoperative visual acuity was significantly better than the preoperative one( P <0.001).Retinal detachment and maculaopathy were the main reasons which led to failure of vitrectomy. Conclusion These results demonstrate that vitrectomy is an effective procedure in treating proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
