Objective To establish a co-culture model of human nucleus pulposus(NP) cells and bone marrow-drived mesenchymal stem cells(bMSCs) and to investigate its effect on the vitality of nucleus pulposus cells. Methods NP cells and bMSCs were co-cultured within transwell culture of 6-well plate. The NP cells were counted for proliferation and proteoglycan was quantified in supernatants from the culture system using ELISA.Result The proliferation and proteoglycan synthesis of NP cells were significantly greater after co-culture with bMSCs(P<0.01).Conclusions The model for culturing NP cells has been successfully established. The vitality of NP cells is upregulated co-cultured with bMSCs.
